Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundaries of Uva and Sabaagamuwa provinces. It is about 30821 hectares in size. It is about 180 kilometers from Colombo. It can be reached from Colombo through Avissawella, Rathnapura, Pelmadulla, Kahawaththa, Madampe, Godakawela, Udawalawa. Below map will show you where is it located.

This national park was established in 1972. This park is in the dry zone. The main attraction of this park is the Udawalawa reservoir and also Walawe river which flows through the Park. This park is most popular for the large Elephant population. They can be seen at anytime of the day. Other than the Elephants you can also find water buffalo, spotted & barking deer, wild boar, sambhur, jackal & ruddy, grey & striped necked mongoose.

There are also various types of birds you can see in the park. Some of them are Crested serpent eagle, changeable hawk eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, grey-headed fishing eagle, warblers, Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Malabar pied hornbill, Sikir Malkoha, Blue face Malkoha, common Caucal, and grey hornbill.

If you hope to come to Udawalawe you can get all the facilities there. There are many hotels near Udawalawa  National Park and there are also few Bungalows inside the national park to stay. If you wish to stay in a Bungalow you have to first book them through Department of Wild Lift Protection, Baththaramulla before you come.
